Your model MBP is not ideal for FCPX because of its integrated graphics card but it should still be fnctional for most kinds of work. (Models with discrete GPU's perform better.)
The recommenced setup for best FCPX performance is tp keep projects and events on a drive that is different from your boot drive, That drive should be fast and connected by Firewire 800, Thunderbolt, or USB3.
Pro Res HQ files are quite large and your system may be struggling to deal with them. In contrast, Pro Res Proxy files are much smaller and easier on FCP and your system. Try working with Pro Res Proxy; remember to change back to Original or Optimized Media in Preferences before you export.
Alternatively, try working in Pro Res 422 and setting Playback to Better Performance.
